What is Shamanism & Shamanic Healing?

What is Shamanism

What is shamanism, and how does shamanic healing work? Shamanic healing is a practice where shamans intentionally leave their bodies to get answers and insight from shamanic spirits and the spirit realms. That insight is used to help heal an individual who has experienced trauma or who needs help resolving an issue. Shamans have been using this practice since before the age of modern medicine and technology. Let’s dive into the topic of shamanism and give an overview of how shamanic healing works.

What is shamanism?

What Is Shamanism?

Shamanism is one of the oldest healing traditions we have, and it’s as much a way of life as it is a practice, one built on relationship with nature and the wider web of creation. The word “shaman” traces back to the Tungus people of Siberia. Anthropologists later borrowed it as a label for the spiritual and ceremonial leaders found in indigenous cultures around the world, a definition shared by shamanism.com.

So, what is shamanism at its core? Five aspects stand out:

  • Spiritual practice
  • Healing of self and community
  • Connection with nature
  • Pilgrimage to sacred places
  • Vision and ceremony

Spiritual practice plays an important role in shamanism. Shamans believe that to grow, you must participate in a daily spiritual practice. Equally important is the healing of self and community, which includes humans, animals, plants, and all living things as a whole.

A deep connection with nature also helps uncover the hidden truths Mother Nature has to offer. Learning to appreciate the beauty and wonder of rivers, lakes, mountains, caves, and so much more is one reason you’ll often find shamans heading to sacred places to honor nature and the spirits with vision and ceremony.

The Shamanic Healing Process

Shamans are healers with a close connection to both this world and the spirit world. They are trained to dive into unworldly realms to help heal and lift the earth’s consciousness to a higher frequency.

When engaging in shamanic healing, it’s not only the shaman doing all the work. The individual has to be open to working with the shaman, which means opening up and having an honest conversation about their background and the problems they’re facing. Together, without judgment, this conversation allows the shaman to determine what kind of healing needs to take place.

Then the shaman engages in energy work tailored to the individual’s specific needs. This could include shamanic breathwork, chanting, or a range of other techniques used to find energies that don’t belong in the person and, especially, to restore energies that have been lost. The goal of the shaman is to help restore harmony within the individual, the community, and the spirit world.
